The Elders’ Mary Robinson delivered the University of Alberta’s Human Rights Lectureship in Edmonton, Canada on April 2nd.
Although it is recognized in the Universal Declaration and enshrined in legally binding international human rights treaties, the right to health still does not carry the same currency as the right to freedom of expression or the right to be free from torture. I can tell you that for millions of people around the world, health is perhaps the most valuable of all human rights. It is inseparable from the right to life and security. And it is women, children and marginalized populations that continue to suffer by far the worst deal.
Mary Robinson, April 2nd, 2008

“Sovereignty should no longer be seen as a privilege but as a very heavy responsibility. Every State has to protect its people: it is only when States respect fundamental human rights and uphold the dignity and worth of each person, that sovereignty will be recognized by all as credible and legitimate.”

Studies show that poor rural women in many developing countries may spend up to eight hours a day collecting water, carrying up to 20 kilos of water on their heads each journey. Every day 6,000 girls and boys die from diseases linked to unsafe water, inadequate health and poor hygiene. Women are the main caretakers for sick children and adults.
But solutions are possible. Women have formed neighbourhood cooperatives to administer local water pumps and provide hygiene education. They have joined together to make sure that water flows where it should. And they have combined their voices to campaign against unaffordable water prices.
Women understand that access to water is fundamental to the realization of a range of human rights.
On this International Water Day, the Elders join with others in reminding the world of the Millennium Development Goal in which government leaders committed to reducing by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by 2015. We must all do our part to meet that basic goal. Time is running out.
You can read more about water as a human right in an article by Mary Robinson. entitled. “The Right to Water for All - a Utopia within our Reach”
Celebrate World Water Day by taking action with one of the partners in the Every Human Has Rights Campaign, UNICEF, which provides access to safe water and sanitation facilities while promoting safe hygiene practices in more than 90 countries.

Tags: video, waterThere are countless reasons why we chose the importance of women’s rights as this month’s campaign theme; and among them is the incredible work of our campaign parters, who continue to demonstrate the essential and central role of women in creating sustainable solutions to end poverty and conflict, and to realize human rights around the world. EHHR campaigners at ActionAid just released a well timed report titled “Hit or Miss - Women’s Rights and the Millennium Development Goals”, which was featured in the Guardian Online.
Like so many humanitarian organizations around the world, working to realize women’s rights has become a common thread running through everything ActionAid does. To illustrate the strength of that thread, they’ve gone beyond convention, using creative partnerships and innovative platforms to highlight the abuse of women’s rights across the world; while celebrating the central role that women play in creating a fairer and more just world.
ActionAid partnered with The Birds Eye View Film Festival to put together and present a strand of fascinating works by women filmmakers from the developing world; you can see a few clips embedded from YouTube below.
They participated in a number of events around the UK; stepped up efforts to highlight their Invisible Women campaign, drawing attention to the impact of HIV and AIDS on women around the world; created online activism opportunities; and even launched a Facebook application: Women Rock!
The Every Human Has Rights campaign will bring you news on women’s rights from our partners throughout the month and we hope to continue throughout the year. Use our Witness Hub page to let us know what you’re doing to help realize Woman’s Rights in your community.
